Consulting writing guide

Reusable patterns for the documents most consultants draft week to week.

Executive summary

A short standalone block that lets a senior reader stop after one minute and still know the situation, recommendation, and ask.

  • Situation — one sentence on context.
  • Insight — the most important finding.
  • Recommendation — what should happen now.
  • Ask — what decision or resource you need.

Workplan / scope

Frame in workstreams, not tasks. Each workstream gets an owner, a deliverable, and a deadline. Avoid mixing methods and outputs.

  • Workstream — outcome-oriented label.
  • Owner — single accountable name.
  • Deliverable — what gets produced.
  • Milestone — the date a senior can inspect it.

Client narrative

Lead with the conclusion. Use pyramid structure: top-line claim, then three supporting points, then the data each rests on. Reduces re-reads.

Risks & next steps

Risks are credible only when paired with mitigations. Next steps are credible only when paired with owners and dates. Without both, both look like filler.
